Interior Style: Attic&Earth

Farmhouse-style furniture and decor with a shabby chic touch, local business attic & earth makes the most out of recycled materials to make something old something new again. Farm tables, headboards and barn doors are just a few of the accent pieces and treasures made by this Pittsburgh husband and wife duo. The Schmidts’ family-owned business takes custom orders and is also in the process of converting an house into little white barn in Kennedy Township. What began as a side hobby has turned into a successful small business with big dreams for the future. Read about attic & earth and some of the gorgeous distressed pieces made straight from the workshop!

Q: Tell us a bit about your profession/Company.

At attic+earth we specialize in farmhouse style home decor and furniture. We love chippy paint and using recycled materials to create unique pieces for our customers. Most of our business comes from custom orders such as farm tables, barn doors, coffee tables, headboards, cabinetry, etc. In between our custom orders we create our own unique pieces and add those to our website atticandearth.com for purchase! We love using recycled materials and refinishing older pieces. Ultimately we bring our customers vision to life and we work closely with them to ensure they are 100% satisfied.

Q: How did you get started in your career?

In 2013, attic+earth started as a side hustle for me and in 2014 I left my full time job to chase a dream. I have always worked with my hands and realized I enjoyed renovating and building when we bought our first home in 2006.

“My wife and I renovated and decorated our entire house with a certain style in mind-farmhouse style. We love to design our pieces around imperfection especially because we have three boys!”

Q: Do you have any tips for entrepreneurs?

Keep grinding, work hard, and do not give up no matter how hard it gets. We are still in the grind and have wanted to give up, but we believe we will make it if we keep pushing! Nothing comes easy and you only get out what you are willing to put in. Each year gets a little better than the year before and for us that is enough right now to keep chasing our dream.

Q: What do you love about working in Pittsburgh?

We were both born and raised in Pittsburgh so this is home and we can not imagine ever leaving here! We love the relationships we have formed while working with our customers and look forward to what the future may bring for our little business and our family.

Q: Any big plans for the future?

We are currently renovating/converting an old home into a little white barn in Kennedy Township where my workshop is currently located. We hope to open the doors one day so our customers can come shop our unique pieces in person!
